Helpful Hints for Growing an Apartment Garden

If you live in an apartment, you probably believe there is no way that you will ever be able to grow a garden of your own. There are people who dislike not being able to have a garden so much that they move out of their apartment into a home that gives them a place to put an outdoors garden. Some apartment dwellers hide their disappointment by buying a houseplant or two and putting them here and there in their apartment.

Here is some good news: it is more than possible to grow your own garden-even when you have to do so in an apartment setting. We’ll give you some great tips and ideas that will get you started.

If you are still apartment hunting, try to find an apartment with a balcony. As a matter of fact, another important consideration is to make sure the patio or balcony faces the sun. Your plants will grow better if they at least get a little direct sunlight each day, even if they are shade-loving varieties. Nonetheless, if you can’t find a sunny place to put your plants, there are workarounds. Do some research and you will discover there are many ways to simulate sunlight for your plants. In reality, though, even if you use artificial sunshine, it’s good for your plants to get some actual, direct sunlight each day.

Your plants will grow, hopefully, and with that in mind you need to buy pots and containers that will give them adequate room. Don’t fall into the trap of only buying small containers because your space is limited. Actually, this is one of the worst things you can do. You need to pick containers or pots that are somewhat larger. The plants will "settle in" to their new environment better and start growing. If you put a plant into a container that is too small, the plant will become root bound and eventually die.

Another option, if you have a big enough area, is to set up a mini greenhouse inside. You can sometimes find these already assembled-they are small and can easily fit into the corner of a room. If you lack the funds for this, however, you can build your own using parts and materials that you find through second hand sales opportunities such as Goodwill, yard sales, etc. Your choice of which plants to grow will be expanded if you put them in a greenhouse environment.

A balcony, if you have one, is a great place to put a little greenhouse. Don’t limit your creativity and gardening enjoyment simply because you don’t have a yard or your living area is small. There are many ways you can express yourself through your gardening. You can do this. It’s not impossible, or even hard. Of course, a lot of people may try to convince you it isn’t realistic, but don’t listen to them. Just because you don’t have a yard doesn’t mean that you can’t ever grow plants of your own. All you need to do is find some spaces for your containers and put your plants wherever you want them. These ideas and tips should motivate you to start on your container garden. There’s a lot more advice out there, and you can tap into it by doing a little searching online or at your local library. That homework, along with whatever advice and guidance you can glean from local experts, should help you get your own garden started in no time at all!
